Circlips

A circlip is a spring steel circlip that consists of a semi-flexible metal ring with open ends that can be clicked into place. The lock spring is also known as seeger ring, fuse ring or circlip. Cirlip is a contraction of ‘circle’ and ‘clip’. The circlip is usually used to axially secure/position/fix an element on a shaft or in a housing. Locking springs are classified into three categories. The locking springs for the shaft are for external use (in accordance with DIN 471), available in the normal version and a specific ‘heavy’ version for heavier applications. The locking springs for the housing are for internal use (in accordance with DIN 472), available in the normal version and a specific ‘heavy’ version for heavier applications. The last category concerns locking springs for shafts with a pre-machined groove (in accordance with DIN 6799). These locking springs can withstand large axial pressures.

Mounting of circlip springs

The circlip springs are fixed in a designated groove in the shaft or hub. Special locking spring pliers are used for both mounting and dismounting. These special pliers are available with straight or curved jaws. For external locking springs for the shaft, pliers are used in which the jaws separate when squeezed. With locking spring pliers for internal locking springs for the body, the jaws of the pliers move towards each other when used. Pliers are also available with interchangeable jaws, which can be applied to both internal and external locking springs.
